We are defrosted and ready for the new climate. On one of the hilltops of the Hustai National Park we get an amazing view of the – once again - wide open space. At dusk we drive the jeep into the park looking for what the Mongolians call the takhi, the Equus przewalkskii. Once almost extinct, their further existence is temporarily guaranteed thanks to a Dutch project, among others. At present there are about 180 of these horses living at Hustai NP, 80 percent of which were born in the wild. Mankind is no longer their biggest enemy, it is the wolf. That’s how it should be. We spot one of the stallion with his harem, about ten of them together. Much to my surprise they are not all that shy. They approach us up to about 20 metres while grazing. Wat a peculiar animal. And what a big head!
